Pet-Friendly Fake Grass Guide for Halifax Dog Owners

By Maritime Turf Team · May 28, 2026

Pet-friendly artificial turf in a Halifax backyard

Dog owners in Halifax know the drill: a few weeks of wet weather and the backyard turns into a mud pit. Paws track it inside, the lawn looks destroyed, and it never quite recovers. Pet-friendly artificial grass solves all of that — but not all turf is equal when it comes to dogs.

Drainage Is Everything

The most important feature for a pet turf installation is drainage. Dog urine needs to pass straight through the backing and into the sub-base below — any turf that holds moisture will smell, fast. Look for a perforated backing with drainage holes every few inches and a properly graded stone base underneath.

Blade Height and Density

For dogs, we recommend a shorter blade height (30–40mm) with higher density. Shorter blades are easier to rinse clean and the surface stays cooler in summer. High density means the turf stands up to digging and running without showing wear lines.

Cleaning is Simple

For solid waste, pick it up just like you would on natural grass. For urine, a weekly rinse with a garden hose is enough. For deeper cleans, a diluted white vinegar solution works well and is safe for pets. Avoid bleach — it degrades the backing.

Is Artificial Grass Safe for Dogs?

Yes — quality artificial grass products are non-toxic and pet-safe. The infill we use is either coated silica sand or a cork-based option, both of which are safe if ingested in small amounts. The blades are made from polyethylene, which is the same material used in most food-grade plastic containers.
